Patterns that Aren’t
Whether connecting imaginary lines to stars in the night sky or creating algorithms that direct a robot’s movements, there are reams of data to support the belief that humans are hard-wired to seek out patterns as a means of adapting to their environment. However, once a pattern is understood, the individual may lose interest?
In all things visual, patterns can be utilised as an “engagement” tool, much like colour theory or compositional arrangements. When designed properly, patterns become both a visual science and a visual vocabulary tool that enhances a viewer’s engagement.
However, patterns, like those associated with wallpaper, tend to disengage the viewer because the patterns are too simplistic. This un-engaging response is common with a lot of repetitive patterns. One way to avoid this is to utilize non-repetitive patterns.
But, how do you do this?
In recent years, I’ve been drawn to research associated with “aperiodic” mono-tiles spearheaded by amateur mathematician David Smith and Professor Craig Kaplan*. I’ve found that this research can also be used to create a new (or different) visual vocabulary that works extremely well for engaging audiences.

Purpose/Artistic Objectives:
A. To utilise a lifetime of experiences as an artist, creative thinker, trainer, and coach, in a manner that inspires or contributes to an improved sense of creativeness for individuals, organisations, and/or communities.
B. To further develop and promote artwork and creative ideas within communities through a website, social-media platforms and/or venues such as art galleries, displays and/or other activities (such as talks workshops). The ultimate goal being increased recognition for what I do as an artist.
